Gidanamikaagoo Mooingwanekaaning means “Welcome to Madeline Island” in Anishinaabe (also called Ojibwe), the native language of the Ojibwe Tribes. Visitors to Madeline Island are now able to learn a few words of the Ojibwe language through bilingual Anishinaabe and English way-finding signs.

The Apostle Islands archipelago, was named by early Jesuits who believed there were only 12 islands. There were really 22, and of these, Madeline Island is the largest, and the only one with a year round population. Click here for a historical time line of Madeline Island.
